LGBT Azeri turn to courts in search of legal recognition

A leading Azerbaijan LGBT organisation has stated it claims to file a lawsuit against the nation’s Ministry of Justice in connection to their denial of state registration.

‘Nefes’, an LGBT advocacy alliance has been seeking legal recognition since they began campaigning in 2012.

A final appeal was given by the group in May but no response from the court was received, not even a rejection.

Now in face of the government’s continued denial to recognise them as a legal and legitimate charity the group will take out a law suit with Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Justice.

As a fully recognised charity Nefes would have the same rights as other groups also working in the country. Since their work began in late 2012 Nefes has campaigned for the rights and recognition of LGBT individuals in Azerbaijan and has undergone several projects aimed at pressuring organisations, including the office of the president, into changing their actions and attitudes towards the LGBT community.
