Azerbaijani authorities have this weekend arrested and held activist Rasul Djafarov, a campaigner who coordinates the project ‘Art for Democracy’.
Djafarov was arrested on Saturday for tax evasion, illegal business and abuse of power and will be held for a three month ‘pre-trial period’ before being sentenced later this year. The campaigner has pleaded not guilty and claims that the charges against him are false, leading many to believe that this is another politically motivated arrest.
Speaking on behalf of Djafarov a representative told reporters that there had been very little evidence to back up the arrest and that accusation had been made on speculation rather than actual fact.
Djafarov now joins an ever growing list of campaigners, activists and journalists arrested by the Azerbaijan regime in the last year.
