Leading Gerogian director Eldar Shengelaia has announced his plans to return to film making with a film about the relations between the peoples of the Caucasus.
The film, titled “The Caucasus Trio”, will be Shengelaia’s first film after a 20 year break and is expected to be a call for peace from the renowned director.
The film will look at the relations between different Caucasian cultures, but will have a particular focus on the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Shengelaia made particular effort to use an international team for his film, which is made up of Georgians, Azerbaijanis and Armenians.
Shengelaia gained fame under Soviet as a film maker included in the ‘golden fund’ of Soviet-era cinema. He is also well-loved across the Caucasus. In 2012 he was invited by Armenian film lovers as guest of honour at Yerevan’s Golden Apricot Film Festival. He was also close to renowned Armenian film maker Sergei Parajanov, who was considered a teacher and a friend.
The Caucasus Trio is currently in the early stages of production and is expected to be released in 2015.
