A 15-year old prisoner recently captured in the conflicted region of Nagorno-Karabakh has today been repatriated to Azerbaijan by local authorities.
The arrest of the teenager caused widespread upset in Azerbaijan and the international community.
Azerbaijan claimed that the imprisonment of the civilian child constitutes a war crime and several human rights groups spoke out against potential breaches of the boy’s human rights.
The release comes after the International Committee of The Red Cross held talks between Azerbaijan and Karabakh authorities on the subject of a possible prisoner release.
Exact reasons for the boys arrest have not been release, though it is thought that he was captured in the Tartar region and is likely to have been considered a trespasser after crossing a militarized border in the area.
