A number of activists this week protested Azerbaijan’s government and their ongoing repression of civil society in a demonstration outside the building of the European Parliament.

Among the group were many political refugees from Azerbaijan and a number of groups representing various issues within Azerbaijan and the Azeri community.

Demonstrators peacefully gathered to draw attention to the current regime’s crackdown on civil rights and to pressure EU lawmakers into taking action against President Aliyev and his government.

One protester’s sign read “the Aliyev clan is proof of European double standards”, in regards to Europe’s cooperation with the Azerbaijani government despite multiple reports of human rights and freedom of speech crackdowns.

Among the issues protested were political prisoners and Azerbaijan’s position as host of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers
