Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has this week criticised sanctions against Russia enforced by Western nations.

President Rouhani described the sanctions as the ‘wrong tool’ and expressed his desire to assist Russia in an interview with state-run television channel Rossia-24.

The news comes after President Rouhani announced that Iran and Russia were currently discussing a shared nuclear energy program in an address to the United Nations General Assembly. Further cooperation was also hinted at late last month, when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavros met with Iranian officials to discuss lifting sanctions on Iran.

Iran and Russia are both currently subject to sanctions from a number of Western states for their nuclear programme and treatment of Ukraine respectively.

Despite EU and US officials being confident of the sanctions many critics have claimed that they do not work, and punish the wrong people. If Iran and Russia begin deeper cooperation against the West it will help to further reduce the effectiveness of the sanctions.

Russia has yet to officially comment on President Rouhani’s statements.
