The scholarship fund is designed to support the ’emerging’ Iranian LGBT community and to combar the human rights violations often aimed at them. It is estimated that thousands of Iranians are living as refugees outside of their country, with many of them fleeing to escape harsh homophobic laws.
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran and comes with a very heavy punishment. Iranians found guilty of engaging in same-sex relationships can be punished by flogging, imprisonment and in many cases execution.
The IGLHRC scheme will reward payments of up to 3000 US dollars for projects that improve the lives of LGBT Iranians and other marginalised group living in the country. The project also seeks to help pay for the further education of LGBT Iranians who have left the country because of their sexual-orientation.
