Azerbaijani authorities have today confirmed that an Armenian helicopter recently shot down in the conflicted region of Nagorno-Karabakh was downed using Russian-made weapons.
The incident caused widespread anger among Armenia and Karabkah and has been seen as a significant step-backwards in the peace dialogue of the region.
News of the weapon’s origins has also upset many Armenians. Despite maintaining close ties to strategic partner Armenia, Russia has continued to supply weapons to neighboring Azerbaijan, many of which have been used in the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Russia’s involvement with Azerbaijan has also raised questions over their commitment to Armenia and their stance of neutrality in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Although many Armenians view Russia as an ally the global power has continued to work against Armenian interests in their cooperation with Azerbaijan, leading some critics to claim that Russia’s alliance with Armenia is of benefit only to Russia.
News of the weapon’s origins comes also after Karabakh officials claimed that further steps would be taken following the incident. It is believed that despite ongoing peace talks that the threat of escalation in the region remains high.
